SUMMARY:Cellist Adam Hall performs For the Birds
DESCRIPTION:When I composed For the Birds\, I did not realize the terrible number of birds dying due to habitat destruction\, building hits and climate change. In the years since\, the problem has further worsened.  I wanted to remind us of the extraordinary beauty and variety of birdsong\, in this case of the Yellowstone Region\, a favorite locale of cellist Madeleine Shapiro who commissioned the piece and recorded it on her “Sounds Nature” CD. Joining of the voices of the birds to those of the cello speaks to the transformative power of music\, and remind us of the intertwining of our lives with those of the animals we live among. I am grateful to naturalist Kevin Colver who kindly shared his excellent recordings as source material.

DESCRIPTION:This in-depth interview in the Flute Examiner  covers a lot of territory: Judith”s call to a life in music; her inspirations\,  commissioning process\, advice to young composers and much more! Flute and piano\, both of the instruments she studied as a child\, have both remained central to her and figure in a large body of her music. Further\, her collaborations with flutists\, including Lindsey Goodman\, Patricia Spencer\, Renee Siebert and Julia Bogorad\, all enriched her understanding of the instrument\, as did her own experimentation and exploration of the ever-expanding repertoire. Her flute music has been performed and recorded by Lindsey Goodman\, Patricia Spencer\, and Laurel Zucker while performances also include Mehrdad Gholami”s interpretation of Ruah at the Aspen Music Festival. Judith\, together with composer Timothy Vincent Clark\,  was also instrumental in the creation of  The American Flute\, a volume with an array of contemporary pieces for adventuresome high school and college students.

SUMMARY:Aspen Contemporary Ensemble plays Secret Ground
DESCRIPTION:The Aspen Contemporary Ensemble\, directed by Timothy Weiss\,  performs Secret Ground at the Aspen Art Museum on August 10 at 6:00 p.m.   Secret Ground was  inspired by Martin Buber’s I and Thou\, and its title is a quote from that source. To me\, it suggested both the exploration of reciprocal relationships among the members of the quartet\, and the notion of the intense presence of music\, the vitality of communication in the moment. The title also refers to the traditional musical notion of the “ground\,” a repeating bass line that weaves the structure together. Here\, the “ground” is more hidden\, and refers to the underlying pitch structure around which the four instrumental parts are built. Secret Ground was recorded by Da Capo Chamber Players on Dreamtigers\, a portrait CD of Shatin”s chamber music.

DESCRIPTION:Violist  Patricia McCarty performs Penelope”s Song in the original version for amplified viola and electronics made from processing recordings of Charlottesville-based weaver Jan Russell at the beautiful Keene Arts Center in Keene\, NY.   Penelope”s Song was inspired by the Odyssey\, but focuses on Penelope\, Queen of Ithaca\, left to fend off would-be suitors and manage as best she could while Ulysses fought in the Trojan War and was then waylaid for another decade after evoking the wrath of Poseidon. She used craft and fortitude that is barely touched on in the telling of the story\, and I wanted to respond by focusing on the telling of her weaving by day and unravelling by night as she staved of suitors who would be king. DESCRIPTION:Listen here:  The Passion of St. Cecilia\, for piano and orchestra begins with a cry of pain inspired by Cecilia’s impossible predicament. The piece was inspired by the story of St. Cecilia\, long the patron saint of music\, though her musical reputation is based on either a textual misinterpretation or a deliberate embroidering of legend in the fifteenth century. In either case\, the piece is about enduring faith in the face of persecution. The recording is by the Moravian Philharmonic\, with piano soloist Gayle Martin and conductor Joel Suben. It is available on the CD Piping the Earth\, a portrait disk of Shatin”s orchestra music. More info here.

DESCRIPTION:Catelyn Hawkins will perform For the Fallen in the popular version for soprano sax and electronics fashioned from the amazing Peace Bell in Rovereto\, Italy. For the Fallen was commissioned by the great Italian trumpeter Ivano Ascari\, and there are now versions for a variety of instruments\, also including flute\, with a bass clarinet version in preparation for and with clarinetist Andrea Cheeseman. The bell\, originally cast from cannons melted after WWI\, is an enduring symbol both of remembrance and of ongoing work towards peace carried out through the associated foundation.

SUMMARY:Flutist Donna Hangen performs Coursing Through the Still Green
DESCRIPTION:Flutist Donna Hangen performs Coursing Through the Still Green\,  inspired by a poem by Wang Wei\, the 8th-century Chinese poet and painter on the Fifth Annual International Music by Women Festival. You can hear it online here. This piece grew from discussion at a National Flute Association conference with composer Timothy Clark and a number of flutists about the lack of flute music composed for high school and college students who wanted more adventuresome music than their usual fare that was not extremely virtuosic\, but were having trouble finding it. Timothy and I contacted a number of other composers\, including Ann Callaway\, Joseph Koykkar and Mark Winges\, and this resulted in volume The American Flute\, published by Subito Music. As a flutist in my earlier years\, I have composed a large variety of flute pieces\, from solos such as Fasting Heart to music for flute and piano\, including Gabriel”s Wing\, to electroacoustic music\, such as shatin Kairos to my flute concerto Ruah. It is an instrument of wonderfully diverse voices and I continue to enjoy exploring them.

DESCRIPTION:There will be a broadcast of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra\, conducted by Mei-Ann Chen performing ICE BECOMES WATER\, scored for string orchestra and electronics fashioned from glacier field recordings at ROCO.org and on Facebook on the ROCO page. . Shatin\, who describes the piece as a lament for disappearing glaciers\,  created the electronics from field recordings shared by glaciologist Oskar Glowacki\, and the performance is accompanied by photos by the wonderful artist Libbie Masterson.  Libbie and I will both be available to answer questions after the broadcast\, as will other artists involved in the program\, which includes the premiere of Lisa Bielawa”s imaginative Centuries in the Hours\, with noted mezzo Laurie Rubin.

DESCRIPTION:JOSE LOPEZ performs CHAI VARIATIONS on Eliahu HaNavi on his program The Judaic Muse on the Sunset Arts Series at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation. The Hebrew word “Chai” means “living” in Hebrew\, and symbolically stands for the number 18 in Cabalistic mysticism. The performer chooses the order of the variations\, with only the opening and closing themes set. Since there are 18! potential ordering\, there is a lot to choose from! The goal of having the performer choose the order is to reach a deeper level of collaboration between performer and composer.
