DESCRIPTION:Preregister here to attend the concert and roundtable!\nSaxophonist Jan Barry and percussionist Stuart Gerber re performing Grito del Corazon in a version for tenor sax\, percussion and electronics\, broadcast from the Breman Jewish Museum in Atlanta. Originally commissioned by Ensemble Barcelona Nueva Musica\, there are multiple versions for the instrumental parts + electronics. And Kathy Aoki created a terrific optional video. DESCRIPTION:Flutist Donna Hangen performs Coursing Through the Still Green\,  inspired by a poem by Wang Wei\, the 8th-century Chinese poet and painter on the Fifth Annual International Music by Women Festival. You can hear it online here. This piece grew from discussion at a National Flute Association conference with composer Timothy Clark and a number of flutists about the lack of flute music composed for high school and college students who wanted more adventuresome music than their usual fare that was not extremely virtuosic\, but were having trouble finding it. Timothy and I contacted a number of other composers\, including Ann Callaway\, Joseph Koykkar and Mark Winges\, and this resulted in volume The American Flute\, published by Subito Music. As a flutist in my earlier years\, I have composed a large variety of flute pieces\, from solos such as Fasting Heart to music for flute and piano\, including Gabriel”s Wing\, to electroacoustic music\, such as shatin Kairos to my flute concerto Ruah. It is an instrument of wonderfully diverse voices and I continue to enjoy exploring them.

DESCRIPTION:Respecting the First (Amendment) had its inception in an earlier piece\, Respecting the First\, for amplified string quartet and electronics made from readings of and about the first amendment. Commissioned by the Fromm Foundation\, it was composed for and premiered by the Casssatt Quartet. It was inspired by my sense that the First Amendment was under attack\, and that the freedoms therein guaranteed were on shaky ground. This new take\, with a very different trajectory for the electronics as well as recomposed instrumental music\, reflects my sense of the worsening situation regarding freedoms of religion\, of the press\, and of the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for redress of grievances. Respecting the First (Amendment) was commissioned by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra and their director\, Barbara Day Turner. Her program is a modern day commentary on a dark time.

DESCRIPTION:Organist Gail Archer performs Dust & Shadow for organ at St. John Nepomucene on her program of organ music by women composers. She commissioned it in 2017\, and has toured it world-wide. I had a marvelous time developing special timbral combinations on the organs at the First Presbyterian Church and at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville\, VA. I am grateful for the opportunity to  experiment on these beautiful organs\, and thank organists Jeremy Thompson and Alice Layman for their kind assistance.

DESCRIPTION:unter soreles vigele\, commissioned by YIVO\, will receive a peek preview performance byMezzo Kathy Soroka and pianist Nathan Carterette  on the program Folk Songs and Love Songs on March 11\, 8:00 PM at Walker Recital Hall of Mercyhurst University. My interpretation of this beautifully mysterious folksong floats on whole-tone scales and timbral imaginings\, tied to triadic moments. Katherine Soroka and Nathan Carterette are outstanding performers and long-time champions of my music\, with Nathan just releasing his masterful interpretation of my Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi on his CD Poets of the Piano: Acts of Faith\, also available on multiple streaming service. The premiere will take place at the Center for Jewish History on June 18\, 2020 in NYC.
