It has been recorded on the Milken Archive of Jewish Music\, and was originally composed for Judith Clurman”s New York Concert Singers\, for a program devoted to settings of lyrics from the Song of Songs.

DESCRIPTION:There will be a broadcast of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra\, conducted by Mei-Ann Chen performing ICE BECOMES WATER\, scored for string orchestra and electronics fashioned from glacier field recordings at ROCO.org and on Facebook on the ROCO page. . Shatin\, who describes the piece as a lament for disappearing glaciers\,  created the electronics from field recordings shared by glaciologist Oskar Glowacki\, and the performance is accompanied by photos by the wonderful artist Libbie Masterson.  Libbie and I will both be available to answer questions after the broadcast\, as will other artists involved in the program\, which includes the premiere of Lisa Bielawa”s imaginative Centuries in the Hours\, with noted mezzo Laurie Rubin.

SUMMARY:Cancelled – Corona Virus'd – San Jose Chamber Orchestra premieres Respecting the First (Amendment)
DESCRIPTION:Respecting the First (Amendment) had its inception in an earlier piece\, Respecting the First\, for amplified string quartet and electronics made from readings of and about the first amendment. Commissioned by the Fromm Foundation\, it was composed for and premiered by the Casssatt Quartet. It was inspired by my sense that the First Amendment was under attack\, and that the freedoms therein guaranteed were on shaky ground. This new take\, with a very different trajectory for the electronics as well as recomposed instrumental music\, reflects my sense of the worsening situation regarding freedoms of religion\, of the press\, and of the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for redress of grievances. Respecting the First (Amendment) was commissioned by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra and their director\, Barbara Day Turner. Her program is a modern day commentary on a dark time.

DESCRIPTION:Julie Landsman”s Studio Recital includes a horn quartet performance of Shatin”s Adonai Ro”i\, originally a setting of Psalm 23 in the original Hebrew for SATB chorus.  The concert will take place in Room 309\, The Juilliard School in Room 309\, and also includes music by Eugene Bozza\, Vincent Persichetti and Alex Wilder\, among others.

DESCRIPTION:Pianist Joan Mizrahi performs CHAI VARIATIONS ON ELIAHU HANAVI at Calvary Baptist Church in Washington\, D.C. This piece is a set of 18 variations on the first section of the beautiful melody often sung at the close of the Sabbath. The name “Chai” means for “living” in Hebrew\, and also stands for the number 18. I chose to create 18 variations\, with the order left to the performer\, focusing on the collaborative aspect between performer and composer. Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi has been recorded by pianist MARY KATHLEEN ERNST\, and a new recording by NATHAN CARTERETTE is in process.

DESCRIPTION:For the Birds\, commissioned and recorded by cellist Madeleine Shapiro\, was inspired by the birds of the Yellowstone region\, where Madeleine loves to hike. Sadly\, and astonishingly\, the bird population in the US has declined by 30% in recent decades. For the Birds has four movements\, each focused on the calls of different types of birds: 1. Songbirds 2. Sapsuckers 3. Birds of Prey 4. Waterbirds. May this performance help us focus on what needs to be done to protect them!
