In the Theatre of Air Premieres with the UVA Flute Ensemble

In the Theatre of Air, the result of a commission consortium led by the UVA Flute Ensemble and their Director Kelly Sulick will be premiered on Sunday, 4/12 at 1:00 p.m. in the Rotunda Dome Room. The other commissioners include the James Madison University Flute Ensemble  led by Beth Chandler and the Leach Sparks and Eno Flute Ensemble, led by Lindsay Leach.  The piece was inspired by Mary Oliver’s iconic poem Starlings in Winter. She speaks of them as ‘…acrobats in the free wing. …now int he theater of air…” This resonated me, not only because of this transcendent poem, but also because it reminds me of how music reaches us through the theatre of air.
